Inside a Typical EV Charger Installation Job

A charger is the biggest continuous load most homes will ever add. So the work is mostly about the supply, and only partly about the box on the wall.

The load check. Nothing gets quoted until we know what your supply and your board will tolerate with a charger pulling steadily half the night.

Its own circuit. Nothing else shares it. Protection is sized to the unit you actually bought, not to whichever way happened to be spare.

The cable run. Board to parking spot is the bulk of the labour on most sites, and it is what the price mostly reflects.

Mounting and commissioning. Wall or post, then configuration, current-limiting where required, the app, and a test against your car.

Load management where it is needed. If the supply cannot carry everything at once, the charger is set to back off rather than the house being upgraded for one appliance.

Signs You Need EV Charger Installation

People generally ring a fortnight before delivery day. The triggers are pretty consistent.

  • The car is ordered and the delivery date is close enough to be real.
  • You have been charging off a power point with the emergency cable and a full battery takes days.
  • An extension lead has become a permanent fixture out a window.
  • There are no spare ways left on the board, so any new circuit starts as a board conversation.
  • You have moved to a bigger battery and the overnight window no longer covers it.
  • Your strata committee has asked for a proper proposal instead of an idea.

The Manly Angle on EV Charger Installation

Most of Manly lives in units, and that changes this job completely.

In a house, a charger is a circuit and a cable run. In an older block, it is a supply question, a common-property question and a metering question before anyone picks a unit.

The older strata blocks here increasingly need their switchboards upgraded to carry modern loads and modern metering. A car charger is exactly that load, arriving in buildings whose boards were designed when a lot meant a stove, a heater and a kettle.

So the first thing we work out in a block is not where the charger hangs. It is which supply feeds it, and how the power gets billed to your lot instead of everyone's levies.

Sometimes the answer is a spur off your own board, and sometimes it is a new sub-main and metering, which is a longer conversation with the committee. Either way it comes to you in writing before anyone commits.

EV Charger Installation Pricing: What Moves the Quote

Two identical chargers can be a day apart in labour, and none of that gap is inside the box. Five things account for it.

  • The route to the parking spot, which in a block can run several levels and a fire door or two.
  • What the board can already carry, and whether capacity or protection has to be sorted first.
  • Whether you are on one phase or three, and whether the unit ends up current-limited or load-managed.
  • In strata, the metering arrangement and whatever the committee needs documented before work starts.
  • Conditions on the run: a clean cavity, a rendered wall, or a carpark ceiling already crowded.

The quote is free and it is done on site, because nobody can price a cable run over the phone. The price we quote is the price you pay.

Our EV Charger Installation Process, Start to Finish

  1. Board first, car space second. Load check, route walked, options priced in writing, including the honest option where the board needs sorting first.
  2. Approvals if you need them. In a block we put the proposal in a form a committee can actually vote on, before we book anything.
  3. Install day. New circuit, cable run, unit mounted, with drop sheets down and the place left tidy.
  4. Commission and certify. It gets tested, your car gets plugged in while we are still standing there, then the certificate of compliance and the photos follow.

Most house installs are a single day. A block with a long run or a metering change can take longer, and you will know that at the quote rather than afterwards.

What NSW Requires for EV Charger Installation

Chargers get treated differently by the wiring rules, and for good reason. AS/NZS 3000 expects a dedicated circuit with its own protection, because this is a heavy load that runs for hours rather than minutes.

The install is notifiable electrical work, so a certificate of compliance for electrical work is lodged with NSW Fair Trading and you keep a copy. That copy matters more than usual here, because your insurer or the owners corporation will eventually ask to see it.

The rest is simple. DIY electrical work is illegal in NSW, and a granny cable in a power point is not a charging solution, it is a temporary measure the manufacturer expects you to stop using.

Why Locals Choose Us for EV Charger Installation

We are Master Electricians Australia members, and this is the kind of work where that shows: dedicated circuits, decent switchgear, and a commissioning step that is not just switching it on and leaving.

We fit Clipsal and Hager gear on the circuit side, because the protection matters more than the badge on the charger.

Jack left us a Google review about his charger going in with good gear and the tidiest cable run he had come across, with the invoice landing exactly on the quoted price. By then he had used us three times.

Servicing Nearby Homes Too

Chargers rarely arrive alone. If the board has to make room first, that is switchboard upgrades, and if the limit is the supply itself, you are looking at Level 2 work instead.

We take this work across Manly and out through the Northern Beaches, including Fairlight, Balgowlah and Freshwater.

Common questions

Your EV Charger Installation FAQs

Six questions that land before the car does.

How is EV charger installation covered if something fails later?

The install work carries our lifetime workmanship guarantee, and the charger itself has a 12-month product warranty from us sitting over the manufacturer's own. Chargers are a young product category and they do occasionally throw faults, so if yours starts misbehaving, call us before you call the brand. The trouble is often on the circuit rather than inside the box.

Can I supply my own gear, or do you bring the materials?

Either way works. Plenty of people buy the charger with the car or through a novated lease, and a unit you already own is fine by us as long as it is compliant here. If we supply it, you get quality switchgear on the circuit side and a charger we know how to commission and service.

Is my home too old for EV charger installation?

The age of the house matters far less than the board and the supply feeding it. We have put chargers into places built before anyone imagined a car drinking electricity. What the old ones often want first is protection and capacity where the circuits start, and we quote that alongside rather than spring it on you later.

How long does the power stay off during EV charger installation?

Usually under an hour, and only while we work inside the board. The rest of the job, mounting the unit, running and terminating the cable, commissioning and testing, happens with your lights on. If you work from home, tell us and we will put the outage where it hurts least.

What do you need from me on the day?

The board, the parking spot, and the car if it has arrived. If you are in a block, we will need the strata approval and whichever key, fob or code gets us into the car park and the meter room. Ten minutes at the end as well, so we can show you how the thing works.

Does EV charger installation work for apartments and strata in Manly?

Yes, and it is a large slice of what we do here, because most of Manly lives in units. The technical questions are always the same three: where the supply comes from, whose power you are using, and how it gets metered back to your lot. We are used to putting that in writing for a committee rather than just quoting a homeowner.
